Dietary Supplements: The Basic Facts

People are increasingly looking for ways to compliment their meals by taking things like dietary supplements. Weight loss or additional nutrition are just two of the reasons why someone might want to use one of these products. However, there is some basic information that any person should know before they start to take any new type of pill.


There are many purposes for which people take supplements and there are many different types of products to choose from. To fit the definition laid out by the U. S. Congress the product needs to be orally ingested and contain at least one dietary ingredient. Because this definition is open to interpretation it is crucial that users do not just rely on government protection but they do research for themselves.


Because these products are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, they must get approval before hitting the shelves. However, the main responsibility for ensuring safety is still put on the shoulders of the producer, so just because a product has been approved by the FDA does not mean it is safe for everyone. Independent research should be carried out to ensure the the company is reputable and has not had violations in the past.


Dietary supplements basically fall into one of three groups. The first group are those that provide additional vitamins to a diet. Since vitamins are important for health these products are usually safe for just about anyone, but it is still a good idea to ask a doctor if there are specific things a diet is lacking and how best to add those things to a diet.


There are also substances called minerals that are crucial to a healthy body. Major minerals need to be taken in certain amounts every day, and trace minerals need to be taken in lesser amounts. Both are vital to good health so if the diet a person is eating is lacking in these things they may be able to compliment it with one of these products.


Other types of products that are gaining popularity are those made out of herbs. Herbs can be added to supplements for a variety of reasons like flavor, smell, or for their medical benefits. Even though some of these products have been used for centuries they still need to be treated like medication which means a doctor should be consulted before they are taken.


These basic facts are a good place to start but it is still important to do some homework before taking any dietary supplements. Although these can be a great way to lose weight or add nutrition they can also be dangerous so should always be taken under the care of a doctor. By following professional advice and being careful a person can increase their health safely.
